St. Louis is a major port city in Missouri and is home to around 311,00 people. It’s an independent city that borders Illinois along the Mississippi River.
Brief history of St. Louis
Originally peopled by the Native Mississippians, the area was originally settled by French fur traders who did business with the locals of the time. The traders named their city after King Louis IX of France who was regent of the time in 1764.The area was then owned by Spain for a while before being acquired as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
St. Louis grew as a port city and was the fourth largest city in the country for a while. As it was the starting point of Lewis and Clark’s expedition and where both settled after their travels, St. Louis because a natural stopping off point for exploration into the new country.
St. Louis was recognized as a city in 1822 and continued to grow thanks to its port and trade connections. The completion of Eads Bridge helped increase trade routes east and west while riverboat traffic continued up and down the Mississippi. The modern city is still a trade hub but has also developed industries of its own.
