Oklahoma City overview
Oklahoma City, or OKC, is the capital of the state of Oklahoma. It is a sprawling city, the largest by area in the country but only 27th in the country by population with around 650,000 people and around 1.4 million in the metro area.

Brief history of Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City was settled very quickly once the land that made up Oklahoma was freed up for settlement in 1889. Once part of the ‘unassigned lands’ the region was quickly adopted by families wanting to make a new life in a geographically blessed area. Between 1890 and 1900, the population doubled as more families were drawn to the area.

This growth meant the state capital was moved from Guthrie to Oklahoma City. The arrival of Route 66 and the railroad meant more growth and the introduction of the stockyards. The discovery of oil meant more jobs and more money flooded into the city and the building of the interchange between I-35, I-40 and I-44 kept people and industry coming to the city. Tinker Air Force Base also reinforced the city’s growth.

From in the 1980s onwards, Oklahoma City has actively redeveloped its inner city areas. The Metropolitan Area Projects (MAPS), were designed to breathe new life into the city as residents moved to the suburbs and resulted in new developments such as the new baseball park, library, civic center, convention center and fairgrounds.
